Waste collection

In the Municipality of Ålesund we have two waste bins: one grey and one blue. The grey bin should be used for waste that cannot be recycled, and for food waste if you do not compost it.

Grey waste binHousehold waste

The waste in the grey bins is collected by municipal employees and delivered to Tafjord kraftvarme AS´ incinerator at Breivika, where the waste is used to provide district heating. The waste is burnt and heats up water that reaches hundreds of buildings through a network of pipes.

In this way, your household waste can heat up schools, hospitals and houses all over the municipality.

Blue waste bin

Cardboard, paper and milk/juice cartons go in the blue bin. The contents of this bin are recycled and made into new paper, cardboard or other products.

Cartons may be disposed of with caps and lids on. Rinsing out and folding the cartons keeps your bin clean and odour-free, and you can fi t in even more recyclable waste!

Waste collection

We will empty the grey bin once a week, and the blue bin once every four weeks. On collection day, place the bin as close as possible to the road, and maximum 10 metres from the road.

The bin must be in position by 7 am (can also be placed there the night before). All households will receive the waste collection schedule in the post before the end of December. This schedule may also be downloaded here from the Municipality of Ålesund´s website.

Recycling banks

Recycling bankRecycling banks can usually be found near grocery stores in your part of the city. Recycling banks have facilities for disposing of glass and metal packaging, as well as plastic packaging and clothing and shoes (in the special Fretex charity shop containers).

Anything disposed of in the recycling banks will be collected and recycled. Every household has been sent a copy of the waste collection schedule, and there you will also fi nd a map showing the location of your nearest recycling bank.
